HISTORY
Both of Pip's parents loved him very much, and they made it -- and still make it -- very clear.

So when school started it was kind of a shell-shock. Primary school wasn't so bad. It was when he went to Hogwarts that it got bad, and he realized that not everything was so happy as it was at home.

Okay. Let's back up a bit. Peregrine -- because he wasn't always "Pip" -- had always loved reading, ever since he could. He started with simple books, but it didn't take him long to go above and beyond his expected reading level. He read Lord of the Rings and his favorite character (naturally) was Pippin. Aka Peregrin Took. It wasn't only the name that they shared (even if they didn't quite share that), and Peregrine -- "Perry" at the time, though he'd never much liked that -- found that he could relate to this ancillary cahracter a lot more than any of the others.

So he started telling his parents to call him "Pippin". His father, however, decided that that was too long (he'd been calling him "Pear" instead of "Perry" for awhile) and shortened it to "Pip", which everyone else seemed to take a liking to. When Pip expressed his dislike, his father took him to read Great Expectations.

Then he was okay with it.

But anyway, school! So, in elementary school he was always pretty quiet. He wouldn't sit with anyone, and would read quietly off by himself whenever he got the chance. Eventually some kids befriended him and it was nice.

But then the letter came. Both of his parents were magical, so it wasn't a surprise, but it was really rather inconvenient. He finally had friends! But none of them were wizards! It was stupid.

And Hogwarts was awful. The Slytherins treated him like crap, even if they were -- allegedly -- at the bottom of the totem pole now, since everyone had this thing in their heads that all Slytherins and purebloods were evil. But Slytherins and purebloods seemed to hate everyone else because they thought that they were better?

Pip didn't get any of it. He just kept reading.

Friends have been few and far between -- despite literally being around other children 24/7 for almost two school years now -- mostly because he'd rather live in his books than interact too highly with real people.

Real people were mean.
